First paragraph has interlineations: "right" has been inserted before "well-beloved" and "Cousin and" has been inserted before "Councillor". This was necessary because the Lord Chancellor was an earl, and earls are typically addressed as "Our right trusty and right well-beloved Cousin and Councillor" .

The language of this instrument shares many similarities with modern Letters Patent for the appointment of Counsellors of State (cf. this example from 2015). At the time, there was no stautory provision for this kind of delegation, so it was handled entirely under the royal prerogative.</text>

              <text>
Buckingham Palace, 15 December 1954

Dear Earl Marshal,

I have now laid before The Queen the matter of the correct order of post-nominal contractions, which has been the subject of correspondence between Garter and Ford. In particular, The Queen has seen the letter from Sir Frederick Ponsonby to the War Office dated 28th February, 1912 (of which I enclose a copy) and endorses the ruling there given by her grandfather King George V, with regard to the precedence to be accorded to the letters V.C. when used in juxtaposition with other abbreviations of Orders and Decorations. Her Majesty wishes this precedence to be accorded to the letters V.C. on all occasions where such abbreviations are used, whether civilian or military, and whatever the nature of the ceremonial. Similarly the letters G.C., while taking second place to the V.C. should precede all other post-nominal contractions. With regard to the wearing of Orders, Decorations and Medals, the Sovereign from time to time approves the order in which Decorations should be worn, and this is published in the London Gazette. The Victoria Cross takes precedence before all others and the George Cross comes second. Whenever this list is published, it is always stated that ‘it in no way affects the precedence conferred by the Statutes of certain Orders upon the Members thereof’. I would be grateful if you could inform the College of Arms of Her Majesty’s commands in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

              <text>
Buckingham Palace, 28 February 1912

Dear Mr Brade,

In Lord Stamfordham’s temporary absence I have submitted to the King your letter of the 27th February. His Majesty says that there can be no doubt that the Victoria Cross should go first of all Orders and Decorations. It is quite apart from any Order of Chivalry, and although it carries no rank with it, hitherto the invariable custom has been to place it before all other Decorations. The King therefore wishes that in all Alphabetical Lists, such as the Army or Navy list the V.C. should be put before the name in Old English Letters; and further that in Addresses, or when its abbreviation is placed in juxtaposition with the abbreviations of Orders of Chivalry, the V.C. should come first. Will you kindly inform the Admiralty of His Majesty’s wishes on this subject?

Yours very truly,

F.E.G. Ponsonby
