To the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty.
Most Gracious Sovereign,
We, your dutiful subjects, the Archbishop, Prelates, and Clergy of the Province of York, in our Convocation, by your Majesty's authority assembled, humbly represent unto your Majesty that a Bill has been introduced into Parliament to amend the provisions of the Statute Law with respect to the subscriptions of the clergy and the oath against Simony.
It is advisable that similar alterations should be effected in the canons and constitutions ecclesiastical relating to the same subjects; and we therefore pray that your Majesty will be graciously pleased to grant us your Royal license to consider and treat of the amending or repealing of the 36th, 37th, 38th, and 40th Canons passed in our Convocation on the 25th March 1605; and to make such new Canons in substitution of the same as it shall appear to us desirable to propose for your Majesty's approval and confirmation.
And we assure your Majesty that herein we shall have regard to the honour and service of Almighty God, and the good and quiet of the Church and the better government thereof.
Signed on behalf of the Convocation of the Province of York.
(Signed) W. Ebor.
7 June 1865.
