Lord Privy Seal

Lord Belstead took the Oath of Office as Lord Privy Seal at Sandringham this morning after which The Queen signed the warrant directing the issue of Letters Patent of appointment.

The Home Secretary would normally countersign the warrant below the words "BY HER MAJESTY'S COMMAND". As the Letters Patent are to be sealed today it has not proved possible to obtain Mr Hurd's signature in the time available and I should be grateful if you would sign in his place as well as in the usual place. The authority for so doing is in section 2 of the Great Seal Act 1884 - copy below.
