John by Divine Permission, Lord Bishop Of Worcester Commissary for this purpose of the Most Reverend Father in God Justin Portal by Divine Providence Lord Archbishop Of Canterbury Primate of All England and Metropolitan, by Authority of Parliament, lawfully empowered for the purposes herein written, To Our beloved in Christ Michael Hopkins Health And Grace in Jesus Christ Our Saviour
Whereas in Schools regularly instituted, the Laudable Usage and Custom hath long prevailed and that with the Approbation as well of the pure Reformed Churches as of the most learned Men for many Ages past, that they who have with Proficiency and Applause exerted themselves in the Study of any liberal Science, should be graced with some eminent Degree of Dignity:
And Whereas the Archbishops of Canterbury, enabled by the public Authority of the Law, do enjoy, and long have enjoyed, the Power of conferring Degrees and Titles of Honour upon those considered deserving of such recognition as by an authentick Book of Taxations of Faculties, confirmed by Authority of Parliament, doth more fully appear:
We Therefore, on behalf of the said Lord Archbishop being vested with the Authority aforesaid, and following the example of the said Archbishop's Predecessors, have judged it expedient that you whose Proficiency in the Study of Theology, Uprightness of Life, Sound Doctrine, and Purity of Morals, are manifest unto Us, be dignified with the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
And We on behalf of the said Lord Archbishop do by these Presents, so far as in Us lies, and the Laws of this Realm do allow, accordingly create you an actual Doctor of Philosophy
And We do also admit you into the Number of the Doctors of Philosophy of this Realm: the Oath hereunder written having been by Us or the Master of the Faculties first required of you, and by you duly taken and subscribed
I, Michael Hopkins the Person to be admitted to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the Right Reverend John Lord Bishop of Worcester, Commissary for this purpose of the Most Reverend Father in God, Justin Portal by Divine Providence, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, Primate of All England, and Metropolitan, do swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true Allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Second, Her Heirs and Successors, according to Law
Provided Always that these Presents do not avail you anything, unless duly confirmed by Her Majesty's Letters Patent
Given under the Seal of the Office Of Faculties at Westminster this Twenty-seventh day of September in the year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty-one
