Victoria R.

Right Trusty and Right Wellbeloved Cousin and Councillor, we Greet you Well! Whereas our Right Trusty and Right wellbeloved Cousin Charles John, Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford Lord High Steward of Ireland hath by his memorial humbly represented unto us that the office of Lord High Steward of Ireland was conferred by Letters Patent, dated the Seventeenth day of July one thousand four hundred and forty six, on his ancestor, Sir John Talbot, Knight of the Order of the Garter, first Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford and that the said Letters Patent set forth that the said John Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford should be the King’s Steward of Ireland, and his heirs be Stewards of Ireland for ever and that he and they should successively and hereditarily for ever exercise all and singular those things which in any wise appertained unto the said Office in all things and in all respects in the same manner and form as the King’s Steward of England for the time being ought to do in the same his office.

That the memorialist hath further set forth that the Lord High Steward of England, during his tenure of Office, bears a white staff as a Badge of his office.

That the memorialist hath therefore humbly prayed that we would be pleased to confirm to him and the future inheritors of the honour of Lord High Steward of Ireland certain privileges therein mentioned among the which is the right to carry a white staff or wand as a badge of his said Office.

We, taking the premises into our Royal Consideration are graciously pleased to comply with the memorialist’s request as far as relates to his carrying a white staff or wand as a symbol of his office and of our Princely grace and special favour do give and grant unto him the said Charles John, Earl of Shrewsbury and Waterford our royal permission and authority that he and the heirs male of his body, being Lords High Stewards of Ireland may carry a white wand when appearing officially in that part of our United Kingdom called Ireland and when attending State ceremonials, and placed at such ceremonies according to the office of Lord High Steward of Ireland. We hereby authorize and require you to give such directions for the due record of our Royal Permission in that part of our said United Kingdom called Ireland as shall appear to you advisable—And so We bid you heartily Farewell!
