My dear Anthony,

The King thanks you very much for finding time to send him so clear an account of the proceedings of the Brussels conference, from which you have just returned.

The brightest spot has certainly been the whole-hearted cooperation of the United States, and His Majesty welcomes it warmly, provided that it does not lead to any measures which will drive Japan to desperation, while at the same time proving ineffective in bringing the fighting to an end. In this way not only is a serious situation created, but it brings inevitable recriminations as to who has left the other in the lurch. His Majesty knows, however, that these considerations are present to your mind, and that therefore this situation will not be allowed to arise.

Yours ever,
(Signed) ALEC HARDINGE.

The Right Honble.
