Title

Procedural Note - Crown Office General Guidance for Warrants and Patents [Undated]

Subject

Crown Office

Description

The Crown Office's internal guidance covering the preparation of Royal Warrants and Letters Patent.

Some of the information appears to be obsolete. For example, the guidance states that Royal Warrants for the Great Seal are usually submitted to the Queen by the Home Secretary. However, that role is now performed by the Lord Chancellor/Justice Secretary.

The guidance also has a tendency to gloss over details. The section on Royal Warrants of Appointment implies they are primarily used for the appointment of Circuit Judges and other judicial offices, but in reality, they are used far more widely (officeholders appointed by Royal Warrant include HM Paymaster General, HM Inspectors of Constabulary, the Clerk Assistant of the House of Commons, and Members of the Electoral Commission).
